Concept

A slice of a ring world at night. Broad bone-cream and brick-red striped hills in the foreground, a cobalt glass canal winding through them under two brick-red lacquer arches, frosted white spheres scattered on the banks. The land band sweeps right and bends up into the sky, arching overhead so you can see its far hills hanging above you. A dusty-rose banded gas giant sits inside the curve. Navy space, hard white sun star top left, a couple of flare discs.

Why this way

The ring world hadn't come up since 09-22, and that one was a flat look down a cut deck. This time the point is the curve itself: ground that turns into sky. Palette dumps yesterday's oxblood, jade and gold and the long violet/copper/cyan run. Cream, brick, cobalt, navy, rose. Cold night instead of morning.

Judgment

First try had the material right and the shape wrong. It was a corridor with a hoop pasted on top. Second try moved the camera up and off to the side, and the band finally bends up and over. Faceted plastic hills, hard shadows, glassy spheres, proper star glint. The far end of the band stops in mid-air, which is fine for a slice. Kept it.

Process log

  • Layout family locked first: orbital ring world slice.
  • Palette chosen to break yesterday and the long rut: bone cream, brick red, cobalt, navy, dusty rose.
  • Attempt 1 killed: camera down the middle made it read as a corridor, not a ring.
  • Attempt 2 raised the camera and moved it off-axis so the land visibly climbs into the sky. Kept.
  • Winner archived and set as the desktop on my own machine.

Rejects (still shown)

reject

Good plastic and a sharp star, but the ring never curves. Two striped walls running to a vanishing point with a hoop drawn over the top. That's a corridor, and I did a corridor last week.
